“Live in a Container” was created in May of 2020 by Larry Lane, A.I.A. (me).
I have been curious how shipping containers can be repurposed to serve a vast variety of uses.
Are shipping container buildings really eco-friendly or “green” sustainable? How are shipping container buildings constructed? What type of buildings can be constructed out of shipping containers? What type of shipping containers are the best type for building design? How are they insulated?
“Live in a Container” explores these questions and a lot more.

My over 30 years of practicing architecture, as a licensed architect, has been filled with a lot of exciting projects all over the world. They include high profile projects like US presidential libraries (JFK Library with I.M. Pei – my mentor – and an commission to design the George W. Bush Library for the Texas Tech University campus while I ran my own firm), skyscrapers in The Hague and in Indonesia, and even an Adaptive Reuse project like the office warehouse conversion into a health and wellness center.
The hit American comedy/drama TV series, “Boston Legal”, used another project I worked on in their show. Does this courthouse look familiar?
This high end NYC home renovation project had to temporarily stop its construction until Robert Redford and his film crew were finished filming part of the hit movie “The Horse Whisperer.” Now, that’s really “Art imitating life!”
Since I had my firm in NYC for many years, many of my projects were office interiors. So, I wrote a book called, “The Designed Office.” The book gives a step-by-step how-to guide for companies who want an office designed, not only for their daily functional needs, but also as a marketing message to their clients.
Feel free to check out my portfolio to see some other cool projects that gave me a lot of insights as to how buildings are put together and how shipping containers can be designed into buildings.
I am originally from Texas. But, my two sons and friends in the NY/NJ area like to remind me that I have lived for more than half my life in the NYC area. Even though, you will still hear my Texas drawl when you watch my Youtube videos and listen to my Podcasts.
